Care Details

Everyday care

Vacuum gently using suction only (no rotating brush / beater bar).
If your vacuum has brush attachments, remove them.

Vacuum both sides when possible — top and underside — to reduce dust buildup and help the rug sit well.

Avoid stepping on the rug with dirty shoes. Ideally, use it barefoot or with clean socks.

Some shedding is normal with new rugs — it reduces over time and does not affect durability.
Tip: a rubber glove (or lint brush) gently swept over the surface can help lift loose fibers.

Rotate your rug every few months for even wear — this helps prevent flattening and keeps the pile looking consistent (especially under furniture).

Use a rug underlay to prevent slipping and reduce stress on the backing.
Note: not all Lumbro pieces require an underlay (for example, wall pieces / murals). An underlay is recommended only where there’s a risk of slipping (smooth floors, high-traffic areas, or areas where the rug may move).

Please avoid removing the backing/base layer. Most Lumbro rugs include a non-slip backing designed to stay in place and protect the piece.
(Wall pieces / murals and some upholstered pieces may not include non-slip backing.)

Lumbro pieces are finished with a water-based adhesive in the backing. For this reason, we recommend dry-clean methods / low-moisture care only.

Avoid washing, soaking, submerging, or prolonged humidity, as moisture can reach the backing and weaken the adhesive over time.

Avoid direct, continuous sunlight to help prevent fading.

In high-traffic areas, vacuum more often and consider a larger size so wear is distributed.

Golden rule: blot / press — never rub.
Blot immediately with a clean, dry white cloth or paper towel.

If needed, use a slightly damp cloth (cold or lukewarm water) and dab gently, then blot dry again.

Liquid stains (wine, coffee, tea, juice, beer, soft drinks, milk, blood, urine, etc.)

  • Blot right away, then dab with a little cold water, and blot again.

  • For tougher stains, use a very mild mix of water + a drop of neutral detergent, dab gently, then blot dry.

  • In difficult cases, a very diluted white vinegar solution can help — always patch test first on a small, hidden area.

Stains not treated quickly / older stains
Use a rug-specific stain remover, ideally:

  • wool-safe

  • pH neutral

  • no chlorine / no strong bleaches
Apply a very small amount (do not soak), then remove residue by blotting.

Key tip: always patch test before using any product.

Solid stains (creams, oils, ice cream, dressings, sauces, food, mud, etc.)

  • Lift excess with a spoon or paper towel (do not smear).

  • Vacuum once it’s dry or loose.

  • If a mark remains: dab with a sponge lightly dampened with lukewarm water + neutral detergent, then blot dry.

  • Mud: let it dry slightly, gently scrape/lift, vacuum, and only then do minimal damp dabbing.

Wax (candle)
Place an absorbent paper towel over the wax and use a warm iron (no steam) on top so the wax transfers into the paper. Repeat with clean paper.

Sprinkle baking soda over the rug and let it sit for at least 3 hours (longer is better), then vacuum.

Do not submerge or heavily soak your rug. Excess moisture can reach the backing and may weaken it over time.

Avoid steam cleaning or high-moisture methods unless advised by a professional who understands tufted rugs.
(When in doubt: ask us.)

For a thorough clean, we recommend professional rug cleaning with a specialist familiar with hand-tufted rugs.

Important: please request controlled-moisture / low-moisture cleaning and equipment that can extract liquids effectively (often “almost-dry” methods), to prevent moisture from reaching the backing and weakening the adhesive over time.

If a loop appears: don’t pull it. Trim carefully or tuck it back in.

Do not pull loose yarns or threads. If a yarn end appears on the surface, carefully trim it level with the pile using scissors. Do not pull it out, as this may damage the structure of the piece.

Store rolled (not folded), in a dry place, protected from moisture.

Lumbro pieces are handmade textile products and are not intended to be ingested, chewed, pulled apart or used as toys.

During handling, shaking or vacuuming, rugs and textile pieces may release small loose fibres, yarn particles or production residues from the tufting and trimming process. This can be normal, especially during the first uses. Avoid direct contact with eyes, mouth or sensitive skin. If fibres or particles come into contact with the eyes, rinse carefully with clean water for several minutes. If irritation, allergy symptoms or discomfort persist, seek medical advice.

Our tufted pieces are finished using a water-based acrylic adhesive as part of the backing process. Although water-based, the adhesive is still a synthetic product and may have a mild smell when new. This should reduce with ventilation. We recommend airing the piece in a well-ventilated area before use if needed.

Do not ingest any part of the rug, backing, yarn, adhesive or loose fibres. If any material is accidentally swallowed, do not induce vomiting and seek medical advice.

Some cushions are filled with synthetic wadding and may also include clean leftover yarn fibres from our production process, reused as part of our material-conscious approach. Cushions are finished and sewn by hand. If a cushion becomes damaged, opens, or the filling becomes exposed, discontinue use immediately. Loose fibres or filling may be harmful if swallowed or inhaled, especially by children, pets or people with allergies or sensitivities.

For floor rugs, our pieces include an anti-slip backing; however, depending on the floor type, placement and level of use, this may not fully prevent movement or slipping. For extra stability, especially on very smooth surfaces or high-traffic areas, we recommend using a suitable rug underlay or anti-slip mat.

Keep rugs and textile pieces dry. They are intended for indoor use only and should not be placed outdoors, in damp areas, or on wet floors. Excess moisture may encourage mould, mildew or unpleasant odours, which may cause discomfort or trigger allergies or sensitivities in some people. If a piece becomes wet, allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before use.

Keep all textile pieces away from fire, excessive heat, sharp objects, moisture, and unsupervised use by young children or pets.

Care for Cushions & Upholstered Pieces

Cushions (tufted pillows)

Lumbro cushions combine a tufted front with an upholstery fabric backing. They are fully finished and filled, but they still benefit from low-moisture care on the tufted side.

Two-sided cleaning guidance (important)

*Tufted / wool side (front): follow the same care as our rugs (low moisture only). Blot/press, never rub. Avoid soaking, steam, or high-moisture cleaning.

*Upholstery fabric side (backing): you may use steam cleaning on this side only, then place the cushion in sunlight / a well-ventilated area to dry thoroughly and prevent trapped moisture.

Practical tip: when steaming the backing, keep the tufted face away from direct steam, and avoid saturating seams/edges, as moisture can migrate through layers over time.

Upholstered (interior pieces)

Lumbro upholstered pieces may combine tufted surfaces with internal layers, backing materials, and adhesives — for this reason, we recommend controlled-moisture care.

*Vacuum: suction only (no rotating brush / beater bar). Use a soft upholstery nozzle.

*Wear: for seating, alternate sitting areas when possible to keep wear even.

*Spills: blot immediately with a clean, dry white cloth. Never rub. If needed, dab with minimal moisture, then blot dry.

*Products: use wool-safe / pH-neutral cleaners only, in very small amounts. Always patch test first.

*Moisture warning: avoid soaking or saturating — moisture can migrate into inner layers and weaken backing/adhesives over time.

*Deep cleaning: choose a professional familiar with hand-tufted textiles and request low-moisture cleaning with strong extraction (“almost-dry” methods).
